Over the course of this year’s British Science Week, pupils at Cubitt Town Primary School researched and presented on a variety of science topics at school, with the winners of each heat going on to the Finals which were held at the Hall on Friday 13th March. A total of 22 pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 (ages 5 to 11) presented their research to a panel of Judges in the Court Room. The topics were:
- Wet Socks
- Tower Building
- Paper Planes
- Friction Fun
- How can a Fizzing Reaction Inflate a Balloon?
- Neutron Collisions
- Pinhole Camera
Judges learned about the best method to dry wet socks, the smoothest surface to allow toy cars to travel the farthest, and how to inflate a balloon with a combination of washing up liquid, baking soda and vinegar. They were impressed with the design of and photographs taken by pinhole cameras, and were challenged to build the highest tower in 2 minutes with spaghetti, straws or lollipop sticks as building materials, and to follow instructions on how to make a paper plane and test it to see whose flew the farthest.
Thank you to the three Judges: Mark Boult, Second Warden; Christopher Kurkjian, Tallow Chandler Governor to Cubitt Town Primary School; and Andrew Robertson, Assistant Head, Cubitt Town Primary School.
After much deliberation, the Bronze Certificate was awarded for Friction Fun (Year 3), the Silver Certificate for Paper Planes (Year 2) and the Gold Certificate for Neutron Collisions (Year 5).
The Year 5 Award Winner presented his Neutron Collisions research in a beautifully handmade book, teaching the Judges all about supernovas, black holes, and gravitational waves with confidence, knowledge and humour.
Very many congratulations to all who took part!
